For its 42nd season, the Robbie Collomore Music Series will offer all four of its concerts in the fall, between Sept. 27 and Nov. 29. As always, the Collomore Committee, chaired by Martin Nadel, has chosen a mix of music genres for the season. All four concerts will be on Sundays at 5 p.m. in the charming and historic Chester Meeting House, which is known for its excellent acoustics.

Beginning the season, on Sunday, Sept. 27, is the Barbara and Edmund Delaney Young Artists Concert. Cellist Julia Bruskin debuted with the Boston Symphony at age 17 and now performs as a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and internationally as a soloist. Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton takes center stage on Oct. 18. According to the Wall Street Journal, Paxton, age 26, is “virtually the only music-maker of his generation—playing guitar, banjo, piano and violin, among other implements—to fully assimilate the blues idiom of the 1920s and ‘30s.”

The Hot Club of Detroit, a jazz ensemble specializing in the Gypsy jazz sound made famous by guitarist Django Reinhardt, performs on Nov. 8, followed on Nov. 29 by classical guitarist Jorge Caballero. He is the youngest musician and the only guitarist to win the Naumburg International Competition, one of the most prestigious and coveted awards given to performers of any instrument.

Buy a season subscription and save money, plus you’ll be certain you will have a seat even when the concert is sold out. A subscription to all four concerts is just $72 (that’s four concerts for the price of three). Individual concert tickets cost $24. Collomore Music Series Presents Lionel Loueke Trio Nov. 24, 2013

In Chester CT Events, Music on November 13, 2013 at 10:28 am

West African guitarist Lionel LouekeThe Lionel Loueke Trio will perform at the Chester Meeting House on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 5 p.m. The concert is the second in the 40th anniversary season of the Robbie Collomore Concert Series.

West African guitarist Lionel Loueke has been called a “riveting performer” who “makes a powerful first impression” (San Francisco Jazz). He’s also been hailed as a “gentle virtuoso” by the New York Times and a “musical painter” by Herbie Hancock.

The Collomore Concert Series is pleased to be bringing this exciting guitarist to the Chester Meeting House on Sunday, Nov. 24, at 5 p.m.

Lionel Loueke started out on vocals and percussion in his native Benin, in West Africa. Following a scholarship to Berklee Music School and a stint at the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz, he has played with many contemporary jazz greats.

A veteran of bands led by Terence Blanchard and Herbie Hancock, Loueke brings jazz into vibrant contact with the sounds of West Africa, in particular his native Benin. The title of his most recent acclaimed recording, Heritage, is a direct reference to his personal odyssey. “I have two heritages,” Loueke says. “One is from my ancestors from Africa, and that goes through my music, my body, my soul, every aspect of what I do. But also I have the heritage from the Occident, from the West, from Europe and the U.S.”

Tickets for the Lionel Loueke concert on Nov. 24 are $21. For students from elementary through graduate school, a ticket is $5. All ticket-holders are invited to stay for a reception after the concert to meet Loueke, his bassist Michael Olatuja and his drummer John Davis.

Ticket info: (860) 526-5162 or www.collomoreconcerts.org. The Chester Meetinghouse is located on Goose Hill Road in Chester.

Robbie Collomore Concert Series Presents: Parker Quartet

PARKER QUARTET IN CHESTER – APRIL 14

The Grammy Award-winning Parker Quartet, hailed by the New York Times as “something extraordinary,” will perform in the historic Chester Meeting House on Sunday, April 14 at 5:00 p.m. The concert is sponsored by the Collomore Music Series in its 39th season.

The Parker Quartet has rapidly distinguished itself as one of the preeminent ensembles of its generation. The quartet began its professional touring career in 2002 and garnered international acclaim in 2005, winning the Concert Artists Guild Competition as well as the Grand Prix and Mozart Prize at the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition in France.  Chamber Music America awarded the quartet the prestigious biennial Cleveland Quartet Award for the 2009-2011 seasons.

Last summer, the Boston Globe reviewed the Parker Quartet’s performance as “intense, virtuosic, utterly assured. Indeed, the group thrives on combinations of intricacy and power. Their touchstones are precision and an assiduously cultivated blend of sound — focused and wiry at its core and, whatever the style, so well-matched that it can be difficult to tell where one instrument leaves off and another begins.”

Concert tickets for the Collomore concert are $21. For students from elementary through graduate school, a ticket is $5. All ticket-holders are invited to stay for a reception after the concert to meet members of the quartet. Ticket info: (860) 526-5162 or www.collomoreconcerts.org. The Chester Meetinghouse is located on 4 Liberty Street in Chester (Exit 6 off Rte. 9). The concert is sponsored by Ceramica.
