Chester Holiday Stroll

Holiday Night Chester Center Friday, Dec. 7
5-8 p.m. (tree-lighting & sing-along at 6 p.m. at Maple Street rotary flagpole)

All the Chester townspeople will be involved in the Annual Holiday Night in the town of Chester, which will be held on Friday, Dec. 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. Boy Scouts line the streets with luminaries, Saint Lucia girls stroll around offering cookies to visitors, Chester Elementary School students sing a variety of holiday songs and invite everyone to sing-along while the town’s Christmas tree is lighted (at 6 p.m.), and the Chester Rotarians help the children hang their decorations.

Chester village is small enough to be ideal for walking, but it is big enough to offer a myriad of opportunities for browsing, shopping, wining and dining, and gallery-exploring at the Holiday Night Festival. Stores, art and photography galleries, and restaurants throughout the village stay open all evening with special events and holiday refreshments.

The Chester Gallery’s annual Postcard Show features only art measuring 4 by 6 inches or smaller. Maple & Main Gallery’s Holiday Show features more than 300 works by 40 established artists, including at least 70 small paintings under $300 and a limited number of original unframed paintings at affordable prices. The Leif Nilsson Spring Street Gallery offers Leif Nilsson’s oil paintings and Caryn Davis’s photographs from world travels as well as the Connecticut River, while the Al Malpa Photo Gallery will host Al’s photographs from New Orleans.

Pamper yourself, or that special someone, at Karma Skincare Studio and Brown Eyed Girl Salon with holiday gifts, customized gift certificates, or makeup touchups. Be sure to see Dina Varano’s new limited edition jewelry created just for the holiday and Leiva Jewelry’s annual “Ring Event” at Lori Warner Studio & Gallery. Chester resident Gay Sherman Weintz will be at Century 21 Heritage selling and displaying her vintage Christmas tree pins and other Christmas jewelry during the evening.

In the 4 Water Street building, stop at Hammered Edge Studio & Gallery to peruse the collection of jewelry, beads, buttons, world artifacts, masks and exotic headdresses while enjoying a little wine and chocolate truffles. Next door, at the Connecticut River Artisans’ Cooperative, enjoy the handcrafted work at this year’s Holiday Show, and then go on to Chester Americana Antiques & Gallery, to find one-of-a-kind gifts including antiques, folk art, vintage toys and games, and found-object assemblages made by local artist and owner Bill Vollers.

Take advantage of the special sales on clothing and accents for the home and other gift items at Red Pepper, and check out the new pieces in the Connecticut crafts section along with always colorful Italian ceramics at Ceramica.

In addition, 27 vendors will be selling handmade items, gourmet foods, jewelry, and more at their 4th annual Holiday Shopping Extravaganza at the Chester Meeting House from 5 to 9 p.m. The Chester Hose Company will sell wreaths outside the building.

Free parking is available at the town’s parking lots at 20 Water Street and Maple Street, both a short walk to the center. Limited on-street parking is available as portions of Main Street will be closed to vehicle traffic.
