Get Fresh 4 School Benefit Picnic

Saturday, June 9, 2012, 4:30pm – 8:30pm
Plattwood Park, Deep River CT

Calling all families! Bring your picnic blanket or lawn chairs and join River Tavern and Region 4 Schools in the first annual Get Fresh 4 School benefit picnic to help support Region 4’s healthy food program. Be a part of helping to bring in fresh regionally grown foods like local hormone-free beef, dairy from Connecticut Grown farmers, fresh seasonal produce and to provide the schools’ kitchen staff with new equipment and supplies in order to offer our kids freshly cooked lunches.

As a local chef and business owner and creator of the wildly popular Dinners at the Farm events, Rapp will be donating his services and staff for the picnic to create a farm dinner style experience featuring an all local menu with seasonal ingredients sourced from area farms cooked fresh, onsite, off the back of his farm dinner cook truck. Sneak a peek at the menu.

The picnic will include live music, family friendly games, and a Local Deals Marketplace where picnic go-ers can purchase discounted products and services provided by local businesses.

Get Fresh 4 School is a new community based initiative introduced by River Tavern’s Chef Jonathan Rapp and Region 4‘s Director of Food Services, Thomas Peterlik, in response to Michelle Obama’s Chefs Move to Schools campaign encouraging schools and local chefs to partner and help promote healthier school food programs. Peterlik and Rapp were among the 500 chefs around the country invited to the White House in June of 2010 to meet the First Lady and launch Chefs Move to Schools. The two aim to work with parents, teachers, local businesses and other members of the community to help raise funds for Region 4 to: purchase healthier locally sourced foods, offer new training for cafeteria staff, purchase new cooking equipment for cooking fresh meals, create an online resource for parents and students to learn about the school food nutrition and daily menus, establish a vocational cooking program, offer scholarships and develop curriculum that will help children learn lifelong healthy eating habits.

Tickets are $25 for grown-ups, kids 12 and under are free. All proceeds from the picnic will go to Region 4’s new Get Fresh 4 School healthy food program. Purchase Tickets here.

All proceeds go to Region 4 Schools
