Pillars of Chester: A town wide potluck picnic will be held at the Meeting House starting at 4:30 pm on Sunday August 2nd to honor four residents as Pillars of Chester for their years of dedication to our community. Please bring a picnic, chairs and blankets for your family and one dish to share. Grills will be provided by the Chester Hose Co. and music by say What? Chester’s own young rock and blues band. Come and meet your neighbors. The Pillar Committee is composed of members from the Rotary, Library, Historical Society, Town Hall, Land Trust, Merchants and Fire Department.

Bridge construction: I get a lot of questions about the progress of the bridge project over Chester Creek. The following is an update from the DOT regarding the bridge construction:

The contractor is continuing to remove soil and the existing bridge from the North and South bridge cofferdams.  This should be done within a week or two. The cofferdam steel support process has taken longer then anticipated.  The supports (steel I-Beams) are welded and bolted around the circumference of the cofferdam.  They are required to keep the steel cofferdam sheets from moving/shifting.  The existing poor soil conditions have made the supports a necessary operation. The concrete pile installation is scheduled for the 2nd week in July.  When this operation gets going it should take up to 2 months to complete.

The town owned building located at the 20 Water St. parking lot (old drive through bank) is vacant. The Chester Economic Development Commission is currently accepting proposals and business plans from parties interested in renting the building from the town. Why was that big tree trunk left standing on Water St? If you haven’t noticed, tree work was done by the state on Water St. about a week ago. There is now a huge bare tree trunk standing on the side of the road. The story is, the DOT left the trunk of the tree in place to prevent decay of the roots that may result in erosion problems. I’m looking into this further. There s also a trunk on North Main St. that I have been asked about. I’m tracking that down as well.

Have a great weekend.
