Dinners at the Farm 2009

In Dining, Near By Events on March 27, 2009 at 3:12 pm

In 2007, Jonathan Rapp of River Tavern Restaurant in Chester, Connecticut, Drew McLachlan of Feast Gourmet Market in Deep River and Chip Dahlke of Ashlawn Farm in Lyme, created Dinners at the Farm, a series of benefit dinners celebrating Connecticut’s local farms, food and community as a way to generate awareness of the importance and vitality of our local farming community and the delicious, wholesome and abundant food it provides us.

Dinners at the Farm a series of benefit dinners celebrating Connecticut’s local farms, food and community as a way to generate awareness of the importance and vitality of our local farming community and the delicious, wholesome and abundant food it provides us. Recreating a sense of connection to farming, cooking and eating is what Dinners at the Farm is all about.

Each of the dinners highlights the richness of our local traditions of farming and fishing and the often forgotten value of eating fresh, vibrant food that was just harvested by a dedicated farmer you know and trust.

The farms we’ll be visiting this year are: Stanton-Davis Farm in Pawcatuck, White Gate Farm in East Lyme, Barberry Hill Farm in Madison and Old Maids Farm in South Glastonbury. Reserve your space now. See you on the farm!

In Chester Business, Chester Discussions, Shopping on March 13, 2009 at 6:29 pm

Chester Sunday Market

The objective is to become a model in our region by promoting economic relocalization, maximizing the use and sale of local products, and most importantly, strengthening our town’s economic viability. The combination of Chester’s unique and lovely streetscape with a town-wide gathering and marketplace concept, provides a compelling destination for our residents and visitors alike. The market be held Sundays, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm in the town center. Main St. will be closed to traffic from Maple St. to Water St. during these hours.

Tuesday, March 17th we are meeting with our town selectmen to discuss the Chester Sunday
Market proposal. We would like to have comments and opinions from our merchants and
community residents in hand so to have your thoughts and opinions with us for their
consideration. Please take a moment to answer the six questions below, or write your own
paragraph, and enter in the comment section of this blog.

(I will make sure the committee gets your response.)

1.  Would you comment on why you support this initiative in Chester?
2.  What led you to become involved in the planning process?
3.  Do you advocate closing the town to vehicular traffic as a trial?
4.  Do you have goods and services you would like to see offered?
5.  Are you a gardener, crafts person or have a talent to share?
6.  Would you like to be involved and volunteer?

Please feel free to pass this questionnaire on to anyone you think might be interested
in voicing their opinions on the market.
Thank you very much.

Chester Sunday Market

We invite you, community residents, local gardeners and farmers, business owners,
religious institutions, educators, and town officials to join in on the discussion of
a Chester Sunday Market. The success of our town and its future depends on our
involvement and contributions to support each other and maximize our resources.
The goal is to become a model in our region by promoting economic relocalization,
maximizing the use and sale of local products, and most importantly, strengthening
our town’s economic viability. This concept creates a platform to help ourselves
adjust to changing times and uses our individual skills, creativity and collaboration
to make that happen. From our dedication, purpose, and example, we will be
regarded as a town that cares for and encourages its well-being through community
involvement, support of Chester businesses, artisans, and local food sources.

Do You Love to Bake, Don’t Miss Dorie Greenspan

In Chester CT Events on March 6, 2009 at 6:00 am

Congregation Beth Shalom Rodfe Zedek is the place to be Sunday, March, 15 if you love to bake or love the idea of baking. Dorie Greenspan, best selling author, will be speaking at 9:30 AM. To refresh your memory her books include Baking with Julia, the book that accompanied Julia Child’s PBS series, Paris Sweets, Great Desserts from the City’s Best Pastry Shops and, most recently, Baking From My Home to Yours, just to name a few. This is part of the synagogue’s long running Books and Bagel series. I swear my mouth is watering already…and BTW, this event is open to the public.

Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which celebrated its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. The film is an exploration of urban spaces in major cities and the type that inhabits them, and a fluid discussion with renowned designers about their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type.
