Jan Svankmajer was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1934.  He began making short films in 1964.  He has also exhibited drawings, collages, and sculpture, many of which were produced during the ‘70’s when he was banned from film making by the communist government.  He has been a member of the Prague Surrealist Group since 1969.  His stop-motion technique brings the inanimate to life creating an eerie yet delightful world.  His films are filled with texture and a swinging pendulum of light and shadow.  He freely mixes people, puppets, food, and worn elements of the industrial age to create visions found only in your dreams and imagination.

About Margreta Stage Playreadings

MSC Playreadings is a year-round forum where playwrights share their plays and have the opportunity to hear them read aloud by our company members.  Designed to provide a professional home for playwrights, the playreadings support the first steps of a play’s development. While maintaining our high standard of excellence, the readings are meant to be informal and process driven.  Our audiences will have the opportunity to observe the artistic process of risk and discovery.  Come prepared to be part of a vital step in a play’s beginning.

About the Playwright

Julius Landau, is a recipient of two Rockefeller Foundation fellowships in playwriting. He was the Literary Manager of the American Renaissance Theater Company, a developmental theater. His play, “Leaky Ceiling” was a finalist for the Jerry Kaufman award. His plays have also been produced in New York City by the Jewish Repertory Theater, Synchronicity Theatre, Turnip Theatre and Riant Theatre.
